Every Captain America Suit in the MCU

Captain America, one of the most iconic heroes in both Marvel’s catalog of crime fighters, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has become a symbol of bravery, justice, and unwavering dedication to doing what is right. Portrayed by Chris Evans for the majority of Marvel’s film franchise, with Anthony Mackie being the latest to wield the shield, the character’s journey from a skinny kid in Brooklyn to the leader of the Avengers has captivated audiences worldwide. Central to his appeal is his evolving suit, which has become a staple for Captain America Halloween costumes and cosplay, representing both the character’s classic style and his growth over time. Each iteration of the suit tells a different chapter of Captain America’s story, from his early days as a propaganda figure in World War II to his time as a fugitive and eventually his successor taking up the mantle. This article explores the different versions of Captain America’s suits across the MCU, highlighting their unique designs, evolution, and the stories they embody.

USO Show Suit – Captain America: The First Avenger

This suit was designed by the USO (United Service Organizations) for Steve Rogers to wear during his war bond tours, where he performed to raise morale and funds for the troops. The USO suit is more of a costume than a combat-ready uniform. It’s made of spandex-like material and features a bright, patriotic color scheme with a star on the chest, red and white stripes on the torso, and blue on the arms and legs. The costume also includes a simple, triangular shield with a similar red, white, and blue design, though it lacks any real defensive capability. The suit has an exaggerated comic-book style reflecting the era’s propaganda, along with it being a reference to the character’s original look in the comics.

Rescue Uniform – Captain America: The First Avenger

Steve decides to make an effort to save Bucky and other POW’s from HYDRA, but doesn’t want to stand out with his uniform. He dons a brown leather jacket over top his USO suit, along with combat boots and pants, a pair of goggles, and a helmet with the letter “A” on it taken from one of the Star-Spangled Singers.

Final Suit – Captain America: The First Avenger

After realizing he can do more than just perform, Steve Rogers asks Howard Stark and the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) to create a suit for actual combat. The combat suit maintains the patriotic colors but is designed with practicality in mind, made of a carbon polymer flame-resistant jacket, a pair of custom fitted blue-dyed paratrooper trousers, a bulletproof helmet with a wings motif, rigged combat gloves for extra grip, a utility belt and a handgun holster. The shield is also now the iconic vibranium round shield, painted in red, white, and blue.

First Avengers Suit – The Avengers

The Avengers suit is one of the most colorful and vibrant in the MCU, reflecting the comic book origins of the character. It features bright blue fabric with red and white accents. The helmet is integrated with the suit and features the familiar “A” on the forehead, though this version lacks the chin strap, giving it a more streamlined look. The gloves and boots have a more prominent red color, white the utility belt blends with the blue color of the overall suit. The shield remains the round vibranium shield, which now has a more polished, modern look compared to the one seen in The First Avenger.

STRIKE Stealth Suit – Captain America: The Winter Soldier

This suit was created by S.H.I.E.L.D. for covert operations. It reflects Steve Rogers’ role as a tactical leader within the organization, focusing on stealth and efficiency. The Stealth Suit is a major departure from Captain America’s traditional red, white, and blue color scheme. It’s primarily dark blue and gray, with a muted silver star on the chest. The stripes are more subdued, blending into the suit rather than standing out, and the shoulders now have a S.H.I.E.L.D logo. The helmet design now has his ears exposed rather than contained under the large chin strap, and the leather straps around his arms serve to keep his shield on his back.

Smithsonian Golden Age UniformCaptain America: The Winter Soldier

After being disillusioned with S.H.I.E.L.D. and learning about Hydra’s infiltration, Steve Rogers returns to his roots by retrieving a replica of his World War II suit from the Smithsonian museum.
This suit is a near-perfect replica of the suit Steve wore during his missions in World War II. It features a dark blue base with the iconic white star on the chest, stars on the shoulders, and flanked by white stripes that wrap around the torso. The suit also retains the red and white stripes on the abdomen, symbolizing the American flag. The helmet is also the same as his WWII gear, complete with the “A” on the forehead and a chin strap. The suit is accessorized with brown leather gloves, boots, and a utility belt, all of which are more practical and old school leather, and less stylized than his more modern suits.

Second Avengers Suit – Avengers: Age of Ultron

The Age of Ultron suit is a blend of the stealth and traditional designs, combining modern tactical elements with the classic red, white, and blue. The suit features a darker blue base with more prominent red and white accents compared to the Stealth Suit. The star on the chest is larger and brighter. The suit now has the Avenger’s logo on the shoulders, as the team has become more established since the last film, and the helmet has Steve’s ears exposed instead of trapped behind the chin strap for more range of motion. The suit also includes magnetic clips for the shield, allowing Cap to easily retrieve it during battle. This overall design would become the blueprint for most of the later suits with varying differences and adjustments.

Third Avengers SuitCaptain America: Civil War

The Civil War suit is an evolution of the Age of Ultron design, with darker shades of blue and more muted red and white accents. The star on the chest remains prominent, though the overall color scheme is slightly more subdued, reflecting the darker tone of the film. More of the dark navy takes over, with the white sections on the arms now gone. A main difference that occurs during the film is Steve still having the Avengers logo on his shoulders at first. But, after the events of the Sokovia Accords being ratified to keep the Avengers under control, and Steve going rogue to keep his friend Bucky out of harms way, he removes the logo from his suit, while still retaining the star and other elements of the suit’s iconography. His suit would undergo more removal of pieces and wear in later entries in the MCU.

Nomad SuitAvengers: Infinity War

After going on the run following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers adopts a new, stripped-down version of his suit. The Nomad Suit is a rugged, heavily worn version of the Captain America suit from Civil War. The color scheme is predominantly dark blue and black, as the navy blue has severely faded, along with almost all the red and white, as well as the star on the chest now being missing, leaving just the outline, which is faint and barely visible. The suit is heavily weathered, with numerous scratches, tears, and damage marks. Notably, Steve no longer wears a helmet, emphasizing his departure from his previous role and identity. He also carries Wakandan-designed vibranium shield gauntlets, given to him by Black Panther, which provide extra combat capabilities.

Quantum Realm SuitAvengers: Endgame

This suit is designed by Tony Stark, with assistance from the rest of the Avengers, specifically for their mission to travel through time via the Quantum Realm. The suits are created to provide protection from the unique conditions of the Quantum Realm and to allow for safe navigation during their “time heist.” The suit is a sleek, futuristic uniform that all of the Avengers wear for their time-travel mission. The suit has a white, black, and red color scheme with the Avengers logo prominently displayed on the chest. It features a high-tech helmet that retracts automatically and is equipped with advanced breathing apparatus and other protective technology to navigate the Quantum Realm’s unpredictable environment. The suit is designed to be lightweight but durable, providing ease of movement and protection against radiation or other potential hazards. Each suit is equipped with a built-in Pym Particle regulator and a wrist-mounted time GPS device that allows the wearer to control their journey through time.

Unlike any of Steve’s previous suits, the Quantum Realm Suit is not specific to Captain America; it is uniform across the team and lacks any distinctive markings or colors unique to him. This suit reflects a unified front as the Avengers come together for one final mission to undo the snap.

Fourth Avengers Suit – Avengers: Endgame

After returning from the Quantum Realm and preparing for the final battle against Thanos, Steve Rogers dons a new version of his suit. The Endgame suit is a blend of his past uniforms, combining classic elements with modern upgrades. The suit retains the traditional red, white, and blue color scheme, but with a darker, more muted shade of blue. The scale/chainmail armor pattern on the upper chest and shoulders is a nod to the classic comic book design, giving the suit a unique texture and visual appeal. Seeing this pattern underneath the damaged parts of his Nomad Suit in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s possible this suit is technically an unfinished model he had stored. All other elements make their return, including the helmet with the iconic “A,” and the star on the chest. Steve also wields Thor’s hammer Mjölnir, proving him worthy in the final confrontation against Thanos (a previous nod was shown back in Avengers: Age of Ultron where, in a contest with the team to see who could lift it, Steve seemed to slightly move it).

John Walker Suit – The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

After Steve Rogers retires, the U.S. government appoints John Walker as the new Captain America. His suit retains the classic elements of Steve Rogers’ uniform but incorporates several changes that reflect his different approach. The suit is primarily a deep blue with red and white stripes that are more angular and militaristic in style. The Avengers symbol on the shoulders has been replaced with an American Flag, the star has been moved from the chest to the left upper chest, and the helmet now sports a more stylized “A”. Walker carries a new shield, similar to Steve’s but with subtle differences in color tone and a more metallic finish.

Once he is stripped of the Captain America title, John Walker is offered a new role as the U.S. Agent. This suit is briefly shown, but is darker version of Walker’s Captain America uniform, with a predominantly black color scheme accented with dark red stripes and white stripes.

Sam Wilson’s Captain America SuitThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier

After accepting the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson receives a new suit made in Wakanda by the Wakandan Design Group. This suit is crafted using advanced Wakandan technology, combining his identity as the Falcon with his new role as Captain America. The suit maintains the iconic red, white, and blue color scheme while integrating his Falcon gear. The suit is predominantly white with blue accents on the chest, arms, and shoulders, featuring a prominent silver star across the chest. The suit is sleek and aerodynamic, designed for flight, and has a pair of retractable Wakandan-made wings that are red, white, and blue, mirroring the Captain America shield. The helmet is integrated into a pair of goggles that provide enhanced vision and communication capabilities. Sam also wields the vibranium shield, using it in tandem with his wings to create unique defensive and offensive techniques.

Sam’s Second Captain Suit – Captain America: Brave New World

In the next upcoming MCU film Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolt Ross is elected President, as Sam Wilson finds himself in the middle of an international conflict. This new suit looks closer in spirit to the earlier Captain America films with Steve Rogers, trading away the more prominent white suit from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for something more traditional with the all over navy blue, though still retaining elements of his hybrid Falcon/Captain America outfit with the lines extending out from the chest star liek wings, along with his actual collapsible wings, and his trademark shades.
