Where Did “May The Fourth” Come From? A Quick Four-word
Fun fact: no one knows exactly who first coined the term “May The Fourth”. The earliest recorded instances were actually on July 4th, 1978, when newspapers would arbitrarily apply the reference to Independence Day. The following year, The London Evening News were the first to actually print the phrase on May 4th, as a way of commemorating newly appointed Sith Lord Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s first day in office.
Ever since, the date has been widely observed in the form of movie marathons, theme parties, official events, unofficial events, and cosplay. Shoutout to those folks in full stormtrooper garb on public transportation, BTW. It probably smells like the inside of a Tauntaun in there, and for that, we respect your commitment.
