April is finishing up to be a huge month for the film industry. A sequel, an animated video game adaptation, an original horror blockbuster, and a anniversary rerelease of a sci-fi franchise epic all made over $20 million at the box office, the first time four films all currently in theaters have done so in years, a sign that audiences still will come out in droves to the cinema if the demand is there.
Ryan Coogler’s latest entry Sinners, a period vampire flick in the 1930’s Deep South starring frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan alongside Hailee Steinfeld, is seeing exceptional success, barely dropping in its second week to still surpass its box office expectations. It has all the makings of a summer blockbuster, despite its devilish premise having arrived on Easter weekend. Although horror films typically perform better later in the year, Sinners has come out on top in the spring season. While the upcoming Thunderbolts* from the MCU looks to take its IMAX screening spots, the popular vamp film shows no signs of slowing down as word of mouth propels it into May.
Coming in second arrives the 20th Anniversary release of Stars Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Anniversary releases for 2000’s era blockbusters have seen large success across the board, with every single live action Spider-Man film rereleasing last year(excluding his appearances in Avengers team ups in the MCU) to wide appeal and audience turnout, with Spider-Man 2 from the Sam Raimi trilogy seeing the most fervent response, earning more than $800,000 from its first day in only 467 theaters nationwide. The third film in the prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith had its rerelease open in 2,775 theaters in the country, casting a larger net to reel in its impressive box office return from a 20 year old movie, though arguably the best and most adored among fans from the prequel era. Despite (or perhaps in spite of) its second life as memed content online for years, kids who grew up watching the prequel films now hold a great big of nostalgia for them, and can even grow to appreciate elements of the stories as adults. The music of John Williams and the lightsaber fight choreography alone is up there with some of the most thrilling moments in all of the Star Wars saga.
Landing behind it is The Accountant 2, the sequel to the 2016 film, seeing Ben Affleck pair up with Jon Bernthal for more action and buddy cop excitement than its predecessor. It seems to have paid off, though it will still need to maintain its impressive haul to make back its budget. Though, it seems safe to say a third part is already being eyed for a future release with the director calling it “Rain Man on steroids”.
And finally, rounding things out is A Minecraft Movie still holding strong with its wide appeal and meme trend of wilding out at Jack Black saying “chicken jockey”. The virality of improper theater etiquette, and just plain rudeness, is not a new phenomenon, but has no doubt helped in ticket sales for the video game adaptation, not to mention the films director making comments that seem to in fact support the antics of its typically young, teen, zoomer audience.
